FAQ’s About Fire Alarm Installations
Do you need an electrician to install a fire alarm?
A Commercial fire alarm system can only be installed in Alberta by a certified Electrician. Depending on the system, location, type of building, and different installation requirements, an Electrical engineer may be required to supply schedules and engineered drawings to certify the system installation will meet or exceed the minimum requirements for fire, electrical and building code.
In your home, you can install your own hardwired, and interconnected smoke and carbon monoxide alarms with application for the proper permit with the local inspection authority. The second option is to use battery powered smoke alarms, and carbon monoxide detectors, however, this is not a suitable substitute for a properly installed hardwired, interconnected smoke alarm setup.
Can an electrician service a fire alarm?
Electricians certified in Alberta are allowed to service a fire alarm system in a commercial establishment. Residential smoke alarm installations should also be serviced by a certified electrician, however, as a homeowner, you can service your own devices as you see fit, but at least by the manufacturers specifications.
How many smoke alarms do you need in a house?
The number of smoke alarms in your home that would require to be interconnected is based on the number of levels of your home, number of bedrooms, mechanical rooms, and hallways interconnecting bedrooms. There may also be other requirements that must be met depending on your location and local authority. General rule of thumb to start with would be 1 smoke alarm in each bedroom, 1 in the halls outside the bedrooms within 5m of the door, and in each mechanical room. All of which need to be interconnected and hardwired to 120vac.
